‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:1-4‬

Girls I’ve been wrestling with this devotion all week! God put it on my heart when we started this Facebook group, this sweet community of sisters in Christ, that He wanted me to share with you all each week. I was happy to obey, hoping that in sharing what God is showing me in my own daily devotions, my successes and my struggles, that we’ll not only be digging into His word together (after all, we’re on a journey of daily REVIVAL!!), but also that it gives you all the chance to get to know me, my heart and thoughts. I want to earn your trust so that when you’re walking through difficult things you would know that I feel it my privilege to pray for you and offer a listening ear and an encouraging verse.
A few weeks ago this topic kept coming up and I knew that God wanted me to share it. I started praying, jotting down verses, thoughts and convictions, but I’ve put it off. I even mopped my floors this morning in procrastination ? Because this subject isn’t a feel good and be encouraged kind of thought (though I pray that we all can get encouragement from this).
It’s compromise. One of the definitions of compromise is to accept standards that are lower than is desirable; to bring into disrepute or danger by indiscreet, foolish or reckless behavior.
The Bible gives us very strong warnings against compromise.
“Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths. You have charged us to keep your commandments carefully.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119:1-4‬ ‬
“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”
‭‭James‬ ‭4:17‬‬
A Christian compromises with the world when they make choices in their life that either takes time away from God or leads them to doing things that go against God’s Word.
I can remember talking to Reece last year about this very subject and I told him that people don’t usually just take a giant leap off the deep end into crazy, blatant sin…it starts with tiny steps, tiny compromises. Sometimes I think we make compromises without fully knowing it.
It can be with our time. We’re busy people!! Life zooms by and my hours outside of work are quickly filled with kids activities. But by not choosing to take the time each day to connect with God in prayer, to hear what He wants to say to us through His Word, we are compromising.
It can be in our thoughts. Are we overly critical? Do we find ourselves constantly finding fault rather than showing grace and love? We’re compromising the characteristics and attributes that God calls us to have.
There can be compromise on our social media. We cannot share Scripture in one moment and bad language in another and think that God is okay with that. He’s not. We can’t comment on one post that we’re praying for someone and then go and create drama or arguments on another post.
It can be with our finances. When money’s tight, maybe we choose not to give as much to the Lord. Or maybe it’s not that money is tight but it’s that we’ve created unnecessary bills that are weighing us down and preventing us from giving God what is His. More tiny compromises to being a good steward with our possessions.
It can be with our children. We choose to let them participate in activities that take the place of church. We encourage them to practice to be the best at their sport or creative art or hobby, but we don’t give that same amount of encouragement to their walk with God. We don’t monitor their social media or learn about the friendships that they have in order to find out if these are all above board. And by all of these actions, we’re teaching them to compromise THEIR priorities. And we’re showing them that we’ve already compromised OURS.
Ouch! Girls, don’t let small compromises even have a foothold in your life because sooner or later it’s going to lead to that deep end jump. God needs to be a part of EVERY part of our life. Not because He wants to control us, but because without Him we are nothing. Without Him, we make quick and foolish choices.
“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:3-4‬‬
We’re watching our world, and honestly, people here in our own hometown, compromise the high value of Scripture for something that feels good for the moment. Churches aren’t teaching what God says. They aren’t upholding His truth. This compromise isn’t small…this compromise is just a few steps away from the edge…
I’m praying that we will chase after TRUTH!! That we will have a HUNGER for God’s Word. That our desire to teach our children to love Jesus will completely outweigh the desire to expose them to the things the world thinks are important. I’m praying that we will so clearly see that it is God who gives us everything, so we should joyfully want to give back to Him. That God’s new mercies every morning and grace upon grace that He gives us should be the example of how we treat others. I’m praying that we won’t compromise. I’m praying for REVIVAL.
